I'm still reeling. Every time I read a story in the New York Times or a Sullivan blog post, I become overwhelmed all over again. I can't stop thinking about it. I don't want to stop talking about it. And I'm so happy to be living it. The image that appeared of Barack, Malia, Sasha, and Michelle on the stage in Chicago Tuesday night blows my mind. That is our next first family. A black family is moving into the White House. I did not experience the darkest days of racism in this country, but my parents did and I have an appreciation of it beyond reading about Selma and Montgomery.
Barack Obama represents an opportunity to leave behind the history of discrimination and bias. He also brings a sense to my generation that our entire political life does not have to be defined by what is our own darkest day, September 11th, 2001. We can experience something positive--we have experienced something positive--and we can move forward into a world where challenges beget nuanced and hard-thought solutions.
