It's been a while since I've written about sports. For several reasons. I'm not even going to play and say the number 1 reason is that I'm busy with school, because anyone who knows me knows that's bullshit. That might be #4, but the top 3 are that the Pats didn't make the playoffs, it's not baseball season, and Maryland games are hard to come by in Texas.
But several of those things are about to get less obvious. First of all, pitchers and catchers reported a few weeks ago and I got my first "the Red Sox are on, thought you'd like to know" call from my mother this weekend. She caught the end of a spring training game while she was cooking on Sunday and made sure to leave me a message about it. I love my mom. The Pats. I can't talk about the Pats right now. And I don't have to, so leave me alone. I also don't want to talk about Manny, unless you're offering to bankroll his return to Boston. For now, I'd like to talk about my Terps. My beloved, beloved, angsty Terrapins.
After catching the end of the UNC game last weekend on gamecast in the library at LBJ (if you were wondering the most depressing way to "watch" a Sunday afternoon basketball game at the end of the season against the #2 team, that's it), I watched last Wednesday's game against Duke at Woodrow's on the drag with Justin and Katie. I somehow convinced them this was a good idea and they were excellent sports even as I made good on my promise to throw all social norms out the window in my considerations of Duke players. I seriously didn't give a shit that Dave Neal layed somebody out. It was awesome.
Tonight, I dragged the same crew to Champion's downtown because I'd called ahead and they told me they'd have the game. Of course, it was blacked out. Mostly because nobody cares about ACC ball here. And you know, the Utah/New Mexico match-up was a real game-of-the-week. Anyway, I spent two hours making fun of Sarah Palin commercials, hockey, NASCAR, Kyle Singler, and trying to catch the UMD score on the bottom line. They lost. Obviously. But only by 2 (to #10 Wake!). Of course, this puts us in an essentially must-win situaton against UVA in Charlottesville on Saturday. My boys don't do well in away-must-win games against crappy teams. So we'll see. I miss my Terps though. I miss seeing those red and black hats just around. I miss watching games with my crew. I miss being so genuinely thrilled when they won and being surrounded by others who were of the same state of mind. Maybe I'll gain some converts. Because who cares about UC-Davis basketball anyway...
